AS/NZS 5131.

AS/NZS 5131 was released in 2016 and has brought massive changes to the manufacture of structural steel and also its erection.
Previously AS/NZS 1554.1 was the driver of weld quality in structural steel manufacture. AS/NZS 5131 is an addition on top of AS/NZS 15554.1 and overarches it but also still works beside it.
One of the big changes is the creation of construction category CC1, CC2, CC3 & CC4. These are the four levels of quality requirements for manufacture and erection of structural steel. These categories have enhanced the old system of GP and SP categories.
CC1 and CC2 will still require welder qualifications compliant to AS/NZS 1554.1. However, CC3 and CC4 require welder qualifications to AS/NZS 2980. This requires more advanced testing and extends the usual 6 months qualification period to 2 years. This can be a substantial cost saver to industry.
The other major factor with CC3 and CC4 is that it requires full traceability of welding, materials and consumables. This is a huge change and requires new and better systems to be in place.
